Ok, we target the Baby Boomer generation or really anyone over 50 on this site. I just consider everyone is going to live to 100 and label anyone over 50 a 2nd Halfer.
There is a lot of wisdom and insight in this group of people. You all, we all – can teach the younger generation some things – as well as them teaching us old dogs a few new tricks.
But here is the premise that I will try to make on this short post here. It doesn’t matter how old you are – if you are retired from your full-time job or if you are still working hard.
Don’t Stop Learning!
Sure, there are some generations behind you that need to know some of the wisdom that you have accumulated through the years. But, don’t stop learning, and don’t stop growing in your life skills.
If you retire and sit in your recliner and don’t do anything – number 1 – stats say you will be dead sooner. But also, this world needs you! This world needs the wisdom that you have. They need to see you still engaged with fresh, new thoughts, and engaging in the arena of ideas. You will do yourself a wonderful favor if you will continue to learn.
I’m not talking about going back to college at 65 or 70 – but that’s ok too if that floats your boat. Leave me out of that boat, though!!
But now, WOW- we live in an age with unprecedented information at our fingertips.
When I get interested in something – whether it is a new skill, hobby, business – tons of stuff – I have started looking at online courses. Now, I’m not talking about long, boring online courses that are going to cost me $500 and 12 weeks of time. I’ve learned a lot from small courses where the individual lessons might be 10-15 minutes or less sometimes.
There are several huge sites online where you can literally change your life with the new knowledge and skill sets.
For a moment I will talk about Skillshare.com. I’m taking one of their classes right now during the time of this writing. I love that website.
Skillshare is a very innovative, but easy online learning community that has thousands of online classes. There are quite a few online learning resources, but almost all of them require folks to buy individual classes, sometimes as much as $500+ per online class. SkillShare is different because they will give us kind folks unlimited access to their entire library of classes (in the neighborhood of 20,000 classes) for as little as $8.25 a month. I’ve looked at it. I’m in it and think it’s a steal.
Skillshare is an online learning community with thousands of classes in design, business, technology and more. You can be taught by real-world know their stuff people who have partnered with Skillshare to bring that course online.
For busy people, Skillshare classes are designed to be bite-sized with short video segments to fit your schedule. I love these type of classes. The short sessions do a world of good for my terrible attention span. But, you can go right to the next lesson if you haven’t had enough on any particular day. You can learn at your own pace on your home computer and on-the-go with their free mobile apps on both Apple and Android phones. Take a look at my demo video –
Talk to you soon!
